How To Improve Your Look As A Woman Over 50

Women over 50 often feel the need to make a change. Usually, in this period of life, your children are adults and have most likely left the nest, creating the space for you to focus again on yourself.

We decided to make an expert roundup and we enlisted Minuca Elena to reach out to 57 wellness bloggers and influencers and asked them the following question:

What are the best tips for women over 50 to improve the way they look?

We receive a range of advice that we arranged into categories, starting from top to bottom, outside to inside. We started with tips about:

  • 1、Hair care
  • 2、Skincare
  • 3、Fashion style
  • 4、Nutrition
  • 5、Strength training, and fitness
  • 6、Attitude

Let’s not forget that you can improve the way you look but to be happy you must also feel well, inside emotionally, and psychologically.

Confidence makes a person’s eyes sparkle and it’s a very attractive quality for both men and women. The last part of this expert roundup is about having a positive attitude.

Without further ado let’s see what the experts had to say.

Hair Care

Isabella Charanduk – Sozo Australia

Our hair health can really impact our confidence especially when suffering the effects of hormone changes, which can often cause hair loss and thinning.

So, ensuring you’ve invested in high-quality, all-natural haircare, regardless of what stage of life you are in, can help you to achieve a healthier scalp and hair both now and for many years to come.

In terms of haircare, it is important that you use products that are scientifically proven to not only give you hair that looks healthy but is also protected against UV and environmental damage.

Plus, using products proven to fight the signs of hair aging is essential to achieving hair that is hydrated, voluminous, and easy to style long term.

Ensuring your haircare does not contain any harsh chemicals, including sulfates, parabens, and silicones, is also vital as these types of ingredients can strip your natural oil, coat your scalp and hair, and negatively impact your overall hair health.

Practicing basic hair habits can also improve your hair health long term.

For example, washing at least two to three times each week, avoiding products like dry shampoos, using low to medium heat settings to reduce heat damage, and implementing a weekly hair mask to keep your hair conditioned, repaired, protected, shiny, and strengthened.

When choosing a haircut to give you more of a youthful look, consider a bob cut. If your hair is thin at the bottom add 12” extensions to achieve a thicker look at the bottom.

This will give you a younger appearance and allow you to add more curls. An asymmetrical cut gives a fun take on the bob cut. You can also add in extensions to lengthen the bottom.

If adding extensions to this look, I recommend getting a more permanent method such as tape-ins, beads, or fusions.

Once these are cut in your hair it will be hard to blend each time you reinstall if you are using a halo or clip-ins. This style is low maintenance and easy to style either straightening or adding in a curl.

There are a few key things that women over 50 can do to improve the way they look.

First, it is important to make sure that you are getting enough exercise. Exercise helps to keep your skin looking toned and elastic, and it also helps to prevent wrinkles.

Second, you should make sure that you are using a good quality moisturizer. Moisturizers help to keep your skin hydrated and looking youthful.

Finally, you should make sure that you are wearing sunscreen every day. Sunscreen helps to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. By following these simple tips, you can help to improve the way you look.

Women over 50 generally have thinner, more delicate hair than they did in their younger years. They also may have more hair loss than they did when they were younger.

As a result, it’s important for women over 50 to take extra care of their hair and to get regular haircuts.

Having a good haircut can make a big difference in the way you look. If your hair is thinning, a good haircut can help to make it look fuller. And even if you don’t have thinning hair, a good haircut can help you to look polished and put-together.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you’re choosing a haircut as a woman over 50. You want to make sure that the style you choose works with your hair texture. If you have fine, thin hair, you’ll want to avoid styles that are too heavy or blunt.

And if you have thick, coarse hair, you’ll want to avoid styles that are too short or too layered.

You also want to make sure that the style you choose is flattering for your face shape. If you have a round face, you’ll want to avoid styles that are too chin-length or too blunt.

And if you have an oval face, you can pretty much wear any style. But if you have a square face, you’ll want to avoid styles that are too short or too layered.

Finally, you want to make sure that the style you choose is appropriate for your lifestyle.

Stop wearing dated hairstyles, dated makeup, and dated clothes. The easiest way to improve your look is by updating with the times and being current with your style.

I’m not saying abandon your personal sense of taste for something trendy, but try and be open to change and see if you can find a more contemporary take on a style you already like or feel comfortable with.

If you love highlights in your hair, move into the hair coloring techniques of today like balayage or ombre.

As a hairstylist, I’m always trying to help women improve the way they look and the way they feel.

So often with women over 50, that starts with being able to let go of what they’re used to and embracing something new!

Skincare

Vanessa Thomas – Freelance Formulations

1. Use a Hyaluronic Acid & Vitamin C Serum

Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C Serums are an effective combination. Hyaluronic acid helps to keep skin moisturized and Vitamin C helps even discolored skin tones.

Both of these products have been studied to improve signs of aging skin.

In one study, hyaluronic acid and vitamin c were paired together and resulted in increased skin elasticity, collagen, and overall subjects reported favorable improvements.

2. Use a Retinol Serum (Vitamin A)

Retinol is derived from Vitamin A found in animal ingredients and is an ingredient used in anti-aging products such as serums and facial moisturizers.

Conventional cosmetics usually contain retinol esters called retinyl palmitate and tretinoin.

Your body converts these into an active form – retinoic acid – that can then be used by your skin cells. Animal-derived retinol and Vitamin A derivatives are called retinoids.

Retinol can exfoliate the surface of the skin, improve uneven complexion/tone, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

When you first start using retinol or a prescription retinoid, your skin is getting used to the retinol.

During this time you may see some skin irritation, but you will need to be patient through this process, as this eventually stops and the skin clears up.

Avni Parekh – Luvly Long Locks

My audience is comprised of Millennials and Zoomers. So, it’s imperative we stay on top of the most current trends!

Plus, many of our stylist clients fall into the MTV Generation, and I make it a point to chat with a lot of Boomers about their beauty regimes.

Below are my top three takeaways for women over the age of 50 who want to improve their looks.

1. Moisturize your face and neck daily

Over time, the skin on a woman’s neck becomes thinner and loses elasticity as well as moisture. This can make her neck look saggy. To maintain supple skin, begin moisturizing your neck and face daily.

2. Implement a beauty routine

If you prefer a quick and simple routine, then implement these two self-care tips;

A) make sure your hair is combed or styled nicely

B) wear your best shade of lipstick. You’ll always feel fabulous!

3. Consider getting Botox or dermal fillers

Do your research to find a reputable, board-certified dermatologist with amazing online reviews whose results meet your expectations. It’s a great option for quick results if you want to touch up wrinkles and fine lines.

Ellen Bigs – Pretty Home

1. Get a good skin care routine.

Skin care is important for women of all ages, but it becomes even more important as we age. The best tips for women over 50 to improve their skin’s appearance are to use products that contain antioxidants and retinoids.

Antioxidants help to protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals, while retinoids help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

2. Use sunscreen

Sun damage is a major contributing factor to the aging of the skin. The best way to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Be sure to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of the skin, including the face, neck, and hands.

3. Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep is important for overall health and well-being, but it can also help improve the appearance of your skin.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your skin can look dull and lifeless. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night.

4. Eat a healthy diet

Eating a healthy diet is good for your overall health, but it can also help improve the appearance of your skin.

Foods that are rich in antioxidants, like berries and dark leafy greens, can help to protect the skin from damage.

5. Focus on your hair

A good haircut is important for women of all ages, but it becomes even more important as we get older.

Our hair gets thinner and drier, and we start to lose some of our hair color. A good haircut can help us look our best at any age.

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a haircut.

First, you want to make sure the style works with your natural hair texture.

Second, you want to consider your face shape when choosing a style. Some styles will help to accentuate your best features, while others may not be the most flattering.

Third, you want to think about how much time you are willing to spend on your hair. If you don’t have a lot of time to style your hair every day, you may want to choose a simpler style.

A good haircut can make you look and feel your best. It is worth taking the time to find a style that works for you.

Gabrielle White – Dash Stylists

The normal changes that come with aging are inevitable but with certain products, treatments, and lifestyle changes women over 50 can still look their best.

Spending lots of outdoor time in the sun, dieting, smoking, and heredity all have effects over the years that especially show on your skin.

Stress, gravity, and obesity also affect the way skin looks. Here are a few tips on how to improve this.

If you currently smoke think about stopping. Research has shown that smoking ages skin prematurely.

1. Wear sunscreen

Stay out of the sun and avoid tanning. The sun damages skin and creates more wrinkles and uneven skin tone.

2. Hydrate and eat right.

Water is so important for overall health and shows in your skin when you are not getting enough. Good nutrition helps repair the skin and adds to your overall health and appearance.

3. Try anti-aging products

There are many products on the market that aid in improving and preventing fine lines and wrinkles that make you appear older.

Prescription treatments are also an option, talk to a dermatologist or esthetician. Just these few tips will have you looking and feeling better than ever.

Sandy Taylor – Foundation Fairy

It starts with proper skincare.

As you age, your daily skincare plays a big role in maintaining your skin health. Common signs of mature skin include deep wrinkles, dry and rough texture, age spots, and the loss of elasticity.

Good daily skin care can help your skin retain moisture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and brighten your overall complexion.

Here are my favorite skincare tips that I would recommend to anyone over 50:

1. Exfoliate

Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells from your skin. People over 50 have thinner and more delicate skin. It’s still important to exfoliate, but it’s important to be gentle to avoid aggravation.

Use a gentle scrub to gently buff away dead skin cells 3 times a week. Choose an exfoliating solution that won’t clog your pores.

Ideally, it should contain antioxidants, like pomegranate extracts, that can neutralize free radicals and reduce damage to your skin.

2. Cleanse

Wash your face daily with a mild cleanser once in the morning and once before going to bed. Use warm water and pat dry with a soft cloth.

Using a mild cleanser won’t strip away your natural oils and helps to prevent irritation. If you have dryer skin, pick a cleanser that’s formulated with ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

Ceramides help to maintain your skin barrier and hyaluronic acid increases your skin’s ability to replenish moisture.

3. Tone

After you’ve cleaned your face, apply a pH-controlling toner. This helps to maintain the PH of your skin and provides an extra layer of moisture.

4. Apply Retinol

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. When applied to the skin, it can help lighten age spots. It also aids in the production of collagen which helps your skin maintain its elasticity.

Retinol is available in both prescription strength as well as over-the-counter. Therefore, it’s best to consult with your dermatologist to determine the best retinol type to use.

I’m in the mindset that less is more and improving our look starts within; with ourselves.

Eating a well-balanced diet, getting in physical activity a few days a week, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, getting adequate rest, spending time in nature, and wearing our sunscreen daily.

When you feel good you look good regardless of your age. But, with that being said here are some of my favorite skincare and makeup tips

1. Facial massage!

Every time you apply your moisturizer day and night give your skin a 2–3-minute massage encouraging circulation, lifting, and lymphatic drainage.

2. Use cream-based products vs. powder-based because they are moisturizing. This includes foundations and blush.

With aging skin, layering on powdered products can make the skin appear cakey and can cause us to look older.

3. Ditch the harsh eyeliners!

As we age our features change and dark harsh lines, tend to make the eyes appear smaller.

What we want is to make our eyes bright! This includes staying away from eyeliner in the lower lash and water line. Instead, opt for dark brown or even burgundy-colored pencil liners.

Cynthia Rowland

Women want their faces to look youthful and the best avenue to maintain or reclaim that youthfulness is to trust your face to Facial Magic®.

As women age, they see lines developing in their foreheads, eye lids losing the battle with gravity, cheeks that sag and a lumpy jawline that cannot be disguised.

Exercise changes everything. Whether you want to sculpt your body or your face, your best avenue of reversing the look of age is to use proven exercise techniques that include anchoring the muscle or muscle groups then creating a lifting, tightening contraction.

Learning the routine is easy. Each exercise requires 35 seconds of contraction so in just minutes a day, you can give yourself a natural facelift that absolutely rivals surgical results without the cost, danger or disappointment.

All you need are your thumbs and fingers, exercise gloves and a willingness to let Facial Magic help you look years younger.

Jenny Cajucom – Glam Nurse Jenny

Use an SPF 40 or over and reapply every 2 hours to prevent brown spots, sun spots and wrinkles.

Include retinol in your nighttime routine to have a faster cellular turnover so dead skin cells go away faster and glowing skin is revealed

Use antioxidants such as a medical-grade vitamin c to brighten, lighten and tighten the skin.

Get a good eye cream to nourish the thinner skin surrounding the eye area.

Choose fragrance-free, medical grade skin care products.

Use a good cleanser every morning and night to remove makeup, excess oils and dead skin cells. Don’t be afraid to double cleanse. You would be shocked at the dirt that will come off even after the first wash.

Exfoliating 2-3 times a week to get rid of dead skin cells.

Use a hyaluronic acid serum to hold on to moisture in the skin.

Amber Lee – Select Date Society

1. Self-Care

The key to looking great at any age is taking time for self-care. If you have the budget to visit a plastic surgeon or dermatologist for Botox, fillers, or some minor changes, these are great ways to take care of yourself and keep up your appearance.

If you’re not a fan of injections, you can practice a great skincare routine at home. Self-Care also includes making time for massages, chiropractic visits, manicures, etc.

When you make taking care of yourself a priority, you will feel better and look better.

2. Sleep

Many women complain of not getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can impact your mood, your health, and your appearance.

When you get enough sleep, it shows! Your skin will be more radiant, and your eyes will be brighter.

3. Skin-Care

A great skin-care routine can make you appear years younger! Don’t ever sleep in your makeup.

Wash your face in the morning and evening and moisturize. Your daytime moisturizer should contain SPF to protect your skin from the sun.

Speaking of sun protection, a SPF on your hands can help your hands maintain a youthful appearance!

4. A great smile

A great smile can improve your overall appearance. If you never got braces as a kid and have always felt self-conscious about your smile, treat yourself to Invisalign to straighten your teeth and improve your confidence.

Get a home tooth whitening kit or visit your dentist for a whitening treatment. You may even want to consider veneers. Improving your smile and smiling often can definitely improve the way you look and feel!

Molly Thompson-Tubridy

The key to maintaining a healthy skincare routine (for all ages, but especially for mature women) is consistency. Making sure you stick to the right routine will help you achieve long-term goals of glowy skin!

For women who are above 50, always use SPF every day, more importantly, ones over 30spf with both UVA and UVB rays.

With that being said, a suncream can lead to clogged pores so make sure to cleanse your face at night (with a soft cleanser).

A cleanser I would recommend is the CeraVe facial cleanser, it is less likely to strip the natural oils off the face since it is so soft and soap-free.

My top two moisturizers I recommend are CeraVe Moisturizing Cream (lighter cream that helps lock in moisture and tightens pores) and the Lancôme Renergie Lift Multi-Action Ultra Firming and Dark Spot Correcting Moisturizer (amazing for extra firming and tightening the skin, and it also has SPF 30!)

Lastly, some of the best age-fighting ingredients are vitamins A (retinoids) and C, and niacinamide.

They correct the signs of age and protect against harmful UV rays, neutralize skin-damaging free radicals, and brighten and tone.

Jose Mier – Heliotherapy Research Institute

The best tip for women over 50 to improve the way they look would be to wear sunscreen whenever going out, either for shopping or hanging out with friends.

I recommend using products that have 7% zinc oxide and an SPF 30 or higher. This should be followed with UVB and UVA protection to better protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays.

It shouldn’t be a one-time process; take your sunscreen along with you and reapply after every two hours.

Once you implement this routine in your everyday life, you will see positive results in terms of much healthier skin.

Another tip for women over 50 to look younger would be to try anti-aging products.

If you are reaching the age of 50 or above, lotions and creams available over the counter can help enhance your natural beauty.

You can use chemical peels to remove fine lines and freckles around the eyes and mouth.

I recommend opting for products that have pentapeptides as they would help promote collagen production.

This would help give your skin a firmer structure making people ask about your skincare routine.

Tommy Vekhayn

Wear sunscreen! Seriously!

Most people avoid wearing sunscreen and think it’s confusing.

Let me put it like this: there’s a massive ball of fire and radiation in the sky that is attacking your very DNA causing cancer, and you can stop it by simply taking a minute to apply sunscreen.

That’s really how it works. The sun attacks the DNA in our cells causing them to turn into cancer.

Every time you have a sunburn – it’s actually your cells destroying themselves to prevent them from turning into cancer. (Sunburns don’t seem so bad anymore- do they?)

While sunscreen companies make it confusing with terms like ‘SPF’- here’s what you need to know: just buy anything that is SPF 30 or above.

I personally buy the Target brand sunscreen that is SPF 50, it’s cheap, it’s in big bottles, and it works great. Lather a ton of it on and cover your skin.

Not only does sunscreen prevent cancer, but it prevents serious aging of the skin. One of the biggest factors in how old we look is our sun’s direct skin exposure.

The more direct sun radiation that hits your skin- the older you will look. Sunscreen completely prevents this.

Direct sun contact causes your skin to wrinkle, tighten, and develop freckles/moles/blackheads. Applying sunscreen stops this.

As a matter of fact, it can actually start to make you look younger, as you apply sunscreen regularly before heading out all day- your skin will be able to regrow and repair removing many wrinkles, making you look younger.

So, you look better and you’re saving yourself from cancer. It’s a win-win in anyone’s book, start applying sunscreen today!

Cassandra Hill

As we have more birthdays in life our appearance changes. It is common to experience wrinkles or age spots. One recommendation for maintaining healthy skin is a natural skin care regimen.

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and protects the skin from environmental damage.

Other benefits of turmeric include lightening dark spots and brightening skin. The turmeric face mask can be used once a week.

For your daily skin regimen, it is important to cleanse and moisturize. The benefits of CBD are endless for your physical health including your skin.

There have been studies showing that oxidative stress is one of the causes of skin wrinkling. Given the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, it can reduce wrinkles.

Another concern some women experience while adding years to life is hair loss. The importance of a diet full of fruits and vegetables can stop or even reverse hair loss.

For the average adult, nine to thirteen servings of fruits and vegetables are needed to maintain optimal health.

Gabrielle Richens – The Rich Skin Club

If you’re a woman over 50 the fastest way to improve your overall appearance begins with your lifestyle habits.

For instance, adding just 15-30 minutes of exercise to your daily routine is enough to trigger endorphins and reduce stress levels that speed up the aging process.

It also increases blood flow and activates the lymphatic system —two contributing factors to skin rejuvenation!

Another huge contributor to youthful skin are antioxidants. As we age it’s important to get a wide variety of antioxidants from our diet.

Leafy greens, colorful fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, and certain fish are all antioxidant-rich foods that help to neutralize harmful free radicals before they damage healthy cells.

Furthermore, they are packed with what I like to call beauty nutrients, such as healthy fats, protein, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins.

Next, make sure your sleep patterns support your body’s circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is a biological clock that synchronizes every cell in the body with the movement of the earth.

According to sleep experts, the 90-minute phase of sleep before midnight is the most powerful sleep you can get.

The body is being replenished and rejuvenated on every level and this reflects almost instantly in your skin!

Lastly, create anti-aging skincare routines. This means protective skin care products like vitamin C serum and sunscreen in the morning, and corrective products in the evening.

Corrective skincare products are typically serums that contain actives such as retinol, AHAs, BHA, niacinamide, or peptides. These ingredients get to work at the cellular level while you sleep!

If you combine these healthy lifestyle habits with the right skincare routines you will notice an improvement in the way look and feel in a matter of weeks!

Kent Probst – Long Healthy Life

Women over 50 can improve the way they look by preventing or reversing skin aging.

1. Wear sunscreen

The biggest culprit when it comes to aging skin is the sun.  Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher, water resistant if you’re swimming.

2. Sleep enough

Getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night will go a long way to prevent skin aging. The statement about getting your beauty sleep rings true.

3. Use a moisturizer

When you’re sleeping at night, the skin rejuvenates and regenerates. It’s a good idea to use a moisturizer at bedtime on your face and hands, especially one designed for anti-aging.

4. Healthy diet

Following the Mediterranean diet or anti-inflammatory diet will keep your levels of inflammation down. Less inflammation will reduce your risk of disease, as well as protect your skin.

Cooking your foods at low temperatures will lower the levels of inflammation and glycation in the skin.

5. Exfoliate

Regular exfoliation of your face will remove dead skin cells and dirt and encourage new skin cell growth and renewal. You should use a gentle cleanser daily before applying moisturizers or creams.

Microdermabrasion a couple times a week is a great way to remove fine lines around your eyes. Your skin will be softer and more youthful looking.

Allison Tray – Tres Belle Spa

I am 51! I suggest first, not to feel bad about your age.

If you put some care into your skin like exfoliating and hydrating you can see a real difference.

Women of this age should be getting facials every few months to tone the skin and make it function in a healthy manner.

We should be moving our bodies every day even if that means just a walk.

Fashion Style

Sira Mas – The Truly Charming

No matter what your age is, if you are confident enough and take good care of the way you look, you can be the most attractive woman in the room – in virtually any situation.

1. Something I usually recommend to my female clients to feel and look more confident – and consequently more attractive – is to speak slowly and smile.

It’s a small habit any woman over 50 can build, that has a huge impact on how people perceive them – regardless of their age.

2. Another thing I always recommend to my female clients is to enhance their body shape simply by wearing the right clothes.

The goal should be the hourglass shape, as it’s considered the ideal and most balanced shape.

So, if you are curvy – which is a great thing, most men prefer that – a good idea is to wear the empire dress more often: it helps show off the bust area and hides the tummy and the thighs areas.

Instead, if your hips are narrow, something that helps is making that area look wider by wearing something white or pink – and wear something dark in the upper area if your shoulders are wide.

3. Another very useful tip for women over 50 who want to improve the way they look is to try the CO2 fractional laser.

It’s a dermatological treatment that basically gives your facial skin a reset and – if done properly – may help you look 5 to 10 years younger.

Gina Kingston

My favourite tip for looking good it to match the colours in your outfit to the colours in your face.  It works for everyone, regardless of your body shape, age or mobility!

Here’s some simple ways to match the colours in your outfit and your face.

Wear a cardigan or jacket that is the same darkness as your hair. So if you have dark hair wear a dark jacket or cardigan; if you have light hair wear wear a light jacket or cardigan.

If you want to wear a cardigan or jacket in a lighter or darker colour than your hair, cover your some of your hair with a hat or a scarf, or cover it all with a wig in a similar darkness to your cardigan or jacket.

Wear a top in the colour of your eyes or lips, but a similar darkness to your face.

If you want to wear different more colour in your outfits, add colour to your face with lipstick, eyeshadow or a coloured wig.

Erica Ball Style

Here are some of my best tips for women over 50 to improve the way they look.

I don’t feel like once you turn 50 you should be completely covered and avoid anything trendy or fun. You want to break the rule of “dressing for your age” in a way that’s going to elevate your style.

Focus on what looks best on your body type, highlights your favorite assets, and on what you feel most confident in.

Pay attention to other women over 50 whose style you admire and translate it in a way that works for you.

Using social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram is a great way to get inspiration and see how other women in your age group are staying modern and on-trend.

There is a real difference between women over 50 that choose to dress stylishly and those that relinquish their style to old fashion rules and ideas.

I love the comparison between the present-day chic style of the women in Sex and the City to that of the ’80s sitcom The Golden Girls.

It was astonishing to me to learn that the women in both shows were in the same age group.

Nutrition

Elizabeth Girouard – Pure Simple Wellness

As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and Emotional Eating Expert for women 45 and older, I know how frustrating it can be to deal with changes in our bodies as we mature.

The best way to keep yourself looking and feeling great as you age, is to focus on self-care, and in particular, your dietary and lifestyle choices. Here are my top five tips to keeping you looking good after 50:

1. Hydrate

Water helps to keep your skin looking plumper with less visible fine lines. It is also critical to keep your digestion and organs running smoothly, to keep your joints lubricated, and to regulate your body temperature.

Unfortunately, by the time you feel thirsty, you may already be dehydrated which can cause darker under-eye circles, lack of brain clarity, fatigue, and more.

Aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day.

2. Reduce sugars and processed foods

Sugar speeds up the aging process and can prematurely age your skin through a process called glycation.

Excess sugar or simple carbs, like chips, cookies, and cakes, lead to blood sugar spikes, which cause insulin to surge.

Unfortunately, insulin is a fat-storage hormone, so that leads to more fat storage, particularly around your midsection and your organs.

3. Sleep

When you are sleep deprived, you tend to eat foods higher in simple carbohydrates, fats, and calories to get a quick pick-me-up.

Lack of sleep can lead to an increased appetite and a reduced energy expenditure, which in turn can cause weight gain.

Your body needs sleep to synthesize protein, build muscle and repair your cells, which keeps you looking and feeling more vibrant.

Adequate sleep helps to keep your moods stable, your memory sharp, and decreases your risk of dementia.

4. Move your body

Studies have shown that as little as 30 minutes of movement each day can help you lose weight.

Exercise can help lower your stress levels which reduces cortisol the fat-storage hormone, so you store less fat.

Weight training or resistance training helps increase your muscle mass which boosts your metabolism and makes you look leaner and more toned.

4. Eat well

As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, food is a favorite tool to support health and longevity.

Omega-3 fatty acids help to nourish your skin from the inside, thus leading to soft and supple skin, reduced inflammation, and boosted collagen production, which means fewer fine lines and wrinkles.

Good sources of omega-3s are fatty fish, avocados, olives, seeds, and nuts.

In addition, eating nutrient-dense foods and antioxidants fuel your body and help prevent cell damage.

The magic combination of protein, healthy fats, and fiber (from colorful vegetables and fruits) will help balance your hormones and provide consistent energy throughout the day – so you look and feel your best – at any age!

Jane Lamason

1. Exercise

Cardio boosts your energy and improves the look of your skin. A simple brisk walk for 30 minutes including a hill is enough.

Maintaining muscle mass keeps you looking fit and toned. Find 15-20 minutes two or three times a week to do some strength training with weights. Use weights that test your ability to finish the workout.

2. Eat a diet rich in antioxidants and low in processed sugar

Antioxidants defend your skin from wrinkles by preventing and repairing the damage caused by free radicals to your cells.

Eat pomegranates, blueberries, raspberries, goji berries, blackberries and cranberries for a good antioxidant boost.

Processed sugar causes a reaction in your skin cells which makes collagen brittle, causing wrinkles. Eliminate as much as you can from your diet.

3. Drink plenty of water

Water plumps up your skin tissue and restores the cells, allowing for younger and healthier looking skin. Drink at least 8 glasses a day.

4. Stay out of the sun

UV rays break down the elastin in the skin causing wrinkling, saging and discoloration. Always use a good broad spectrum sunscreen with a rating of at least 30.

5. Get plenty of sleep

When you sleep your body produces hormones that promote repair and renewal of your cells. Try for at least 8 hours a night.

Dr. Jennifer Stagg

Aging is characterized by a process called inflammaging which is essentially an imbalance in our inflammatory and anti-inflammatory processes that tips us more into an inflammatory state.

Not only does this influence our risk for chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease it also affects out physical appearance including our weight and our skin, hair and nails.

The most important factors that influence inflammaging are stress level, diet and sleep, so

making sure these areas are being addressed are critical.

Sleep is so important for our appearance and there are many ways to naturally achieve more restful sleep such as sleep hygiene practices like keeping your room very dark and cool, avoiding screens close to bedtime and certain nutritional supplements and herbs.

Managing stress can be done through meditation, mindfulness practices, exercise and herbal medicines.

When it comes to diet, a diet rich in phytochemical called bitters can promote a more anti-inflammatory state.

Bitters can act as anti-oxidants and activate our own built in anti-oxidant systems which also combats aging. Bitters also control appetite and can help with weight loss and digestion.

To get more bitters in your diet, consume a wide variety of plants such as leafy greens like arugula, herbal and black teas, and culinary herbs and spices.

Paula Sturm – Radically Nourished

Being a dietitian I’m always interested in how we can remain youthful from the inside out. Here are my top tips for aging gracefully:

1. Hydration is key!!

Proper hydration helps keep our skin plump as well as helps with collagen production. As we age collagen production goes down resulting in added wrinkles. I recommend getting ½ of your body weight in ounces of water daily.

2. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet.

Choose to incorporate at least 75% of your plate with plants, mainly including colorful, non-starchy vegetables.

Reduce or eliminate ultra-processed foods, fast foods, and refined sugars. Switch to using primarily extra virgin olive oil. Inflammation is the root cause of practically all disease and promotes faster aging.

When your plate is composed of a multitude of veggies and fruit you’ll also be gaining a ton of antioxidant compounds which quell free radical damage which have a profound impact on longevity and anti-aging.

3. Focus on polyphenols.

These magical phytonutrients found in certain foods have been studied to have dramatic anti-aging potential by stabilizing telomeres.

Basically, telomeres are a structure at the end of a chromosome and as they shorten we experience aging.

Foods rich in polyphenols are: blueberries, cloves, raspberries, cranberries, pomegranate, black beans, walnuts, pecans, green tea, high-quality olive oil, artichokes, and even dark chocolate!

Enjoy a diet rich in these principles and see how your body radiates accordingly.

Maxwell Kamlongera – MX Fitness

One of the best thing women over the age of 50 can do to improve their overall look is by taking care of their skin, and this can be achieved by a combination of exercising, eating healthy, and adopting a skincare regiment.

Each one of these help on their own, and by combining them, their benefits overlap and strengthen to make an appearance that defies age.

1. Nutrition

Starting with nutrition, healthy eating incorporates consuming whole foods, especially those rich in minerals, vitamins, and other micronutrients.

We are what we eat; our bodies build and repair themselves based on the nutrients we ingest and so reducing processed foods, alcohol, and smoking is pivotal.

2. Exercise

Next, exercising encourages and enhances bodily functions from a cellular level; the nutrition you consume is better utilized and distributed across your body through exercise.

3. Skincare

Lastly, having a skincare routine cannot be undervalued.

Making use of creams, exfoliating, keeping your skin moisturized, and minimizing makeup to let your pores breathe all have impact.

Don’t forget that your skin is a living tissue, and as an organ, it too can suffer or thrive depending on your lifestyle choices.

The most important, best tip, is to live a fulfilling life. Low stress. High joy. This ratio directly affects your physiological age internally and externally.

The perceived age of a happy person is on the lower end of the spectrum compared to the individual who is stressed and unhappy!

The next best tip (no lesser than the previous) is to remove as many substances as possible from your diet and lifestyle. In our 20s, substances don’t seem to affect us as much physically.

However, nicotine, alcohol, and drugs (prescription or recreational) have a steady track record in slowing down skin cell and collagen production.

Thus, by the time we meet up with age 35, we find the need for cosmetic injections.

My last best tip is to nourish your skin and body with good fats, berries, vitamin C, and antioxidants.

These vitamins and minerals are found in clean skin care as well as whole foods. This must be your daily self-care.

Remember they are found easily without always being “added” to conventional foods and skincare.

Rachel Scott – Rachel Yoga

I’m going to hit the big 50 here pretty soon, and we are all noticing those changes that occur as we start to age. Here are three tips to stay young.

1. Think young

Studies have shown that when you think young, you act young – and even to the point of being able to physically do things that they “couldn’t” with an older mindset.

So, my friends, 50 is the new 30! I also suggest reading inspirational stories of people who contribute to and serve their communities at an older age: Chip Conley, and Arthur Brooks.

Get inspired about what you can offer to others because of the benefit of your earth time.

2. Exercise.

Get your blood flowing, and move your joints in all ranges of their motion. The easiest way to feel (and act) younger is to use your body.

You don’t need to do crazy intense workouts; 20 minutes of diverse movement goes a long way.

I love yoga because it helps the body move in a variety of directions, which is excellent for your joint health. But do start adding some weight in there so that you keep your bones dense!

3. Hydrate and eat well

So obvious, I know, but it makes a huge difference! Treat your body like the “30-year-old” temple it is.

I suggest getting a blood analysis done by your doctor, homeopath, or naturopath to catch any deficiencies or concerns early so you can curate your diet and or supplementation as needed to maximize your health.

Juli Kramer – Radiant Shenti

1. Consistent gentle movement

Moving more throughout the day is one of the best ways for women over 50 to improve how they look. Beautiful skin and eyes comes from strong circulation of your blood and energy.

If you sit all day without moving, your circulation becomes stagnant and your skin loses its healthy glow.

Movement can be as simple as taking a walk, patting your arms and legs, or a little more involved by doing exercises such as qigong and yoga.

Interestingly, working out too hard over 50 will age your skin faster. When you sweat, you stress out your kidneys and reduce your fluid levels. Healthy kidneys keep you looking youthful.

2. Adding herbs

Fo-ti root is a powerful blood tonic highly regarded in Asia. Many women, as they age, use fo-ti herb to maintain thick, strong, hair deep in color. It should not be taken without a break.

It should only be taken for 1-2 months per year. It can be added to soup or brewed into a tea. It can also be used to fight constipation, nourish the brain, and delay the onset of gray hair.

3. Dietary Changes

Beautiful skin requires rich nutrients. However, as you age, your digestion gets weaker and weaker. Cooking all foods before you eat them enables your digestive system to process the nutrients.

Raw foods should be very limited once over 50. Ideally, eat raw fruits and vegetables 30 minutes after a cooked meal.

Adding superfoods for the skin, such as jujubes, white snow fungus, and goji berries moistens the skin and improves circulation to give a healthy glow.

Lisa Odenweller – Kroma Wellness

Prioritize nutrition

Nutrition is the greatest determining factor for better aging. If your diet lacks the necessary nutrients, it’s going to show all over your body.

From your under eyes to your hair and even your nail beds. Foods rich in antioxidants and vitamins contribute to long lasting elasticity and vibrancy in the skin.

Because we produce fewer natural oils as we age it’s even more important to include ingredients that are rich in vitamin A, vitamin E and omega three fatty acids.

A nutritious diet has also been shown to improve mental health. There may be no need for outward improvement once you start to foster inward change. A nutritious diet can help to gain clarity in that regard.

Jessica Formicola – Savory Experiments

Beauty and health start from the inside. Don’t forget to nurture your hair, skin, and body starting with the foods you put in.

Drinking enough water can directly impact the appearance of your skin, mood and ability to sleep.

Think of quality and whole foods like the gas you put in your car.

Using premium gas, or nutrient-dense foods, will last you longer and more efficiently than lower-level gas or nutrient-lacking foods, like fast food.

Good food, also promotes good sleep and mood, which will directly impact your outward appearance.

Phung Tran – Be Active is Easy

There is no definitive answer to this question since what works for one person may not work for another. Everyone is unique!

However, some tips that may help include staying hydrated, eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and using sunscreen.

Additionally, stop placing stress over your fat can also make a difference. After menopause, you will find yourself accumulate more fat than before mainly due to the lack of estrogen.

Instead of stressing out about the fat, you can get ahead of it by strength training to improve muscle tone, increase your mobility, and decrease your risks of falls and injuries.

Confidence goes the long way. It is important to stay well-hydrated and to get plenty of sleep to help maintain a healthy appearance.

Morgan Balavage – Splendid Yoga

1. Eat a plant-based diet

The sun is the source of all energy on earth. The closer you eat to the sun, the easier it is for your body to turn it into energy in your body.

When you eat animals, you’re eating recycled sunlight, and it is more difficult for the body to digest it to turn it into energy. What do you want to spend your energy on: digesting or playing?

2. Practice yoga

Inversions are instant facelifts! But more importantly, yoga connects you to your highest self, which loves you deeply no matter how you look.

3. Drink more water

You’re mostly water, you divine ocean goddess! Drink alkaline water and dip yourself in the ocean to rejuvenate your spirit, and your light will shine through, no Botox required.

Strength Training and Fitness

Pam Sherman – The Perfect Balance

Let’s talk about ways to look your best after the age of 50! As a 55 year woman who has been a health coach for 25 years, I want to share with you some things you can do to look your best.

1. Strength training

It is the fountain of youth. Strength training will never ever give you big bulky muscles. It can tighten you up and help you lean out(along with a calorie deficit).

More importantly, it helps you stay strong in your body. Picking up groceries, grandkids, or things at Home Depot are easy when you have strength!

Next on the list is prioritizing protein at every meal. This is important because we start losing muscle(about 1% per year) around the age of 35. Unless we strength train and eat enough protein.

We want to keep our muscles strong. This is why so many elderly break bones when they fall- no muscle protecting their bones.

Protein is the most satiating macronutrient of the three (protein, carbs, fat). Build every meal around protein first.

2. Eat real food. Every day.

Processed foods are not great for our bodies. It’s time to stop with the quick grabs for food(think fast food or boxed meals) and time to start eating real food 90% of the time.

Your skin will look better, brighter really and you will feel better eating real food. Ditch the processed foods and eat mostly food your grandmother would recognize as food.

3. Drink more water

Shoot for half your bodyweight in ounces every single day.

Chris Walker – Fit Pro Income

Lifting weights in the gym is often avoided by people who are concerned about gaining a muscular look, but you may well be surprised about one of the benefits lifting can provide, other than improved shape, fat loss, and warding off osteoporosis of course!

A lesser-known (and often overlooked) benefit of lifting weights is that it helps the body to produce more human growth hormones.

HGH has been called the “elixir of youth”, and for good reason, it has been proven to reduce the signs of aging, mostly as a result of stimulating collagen production in the body.

A lack of collagen is what creates saggy skin, including wrinkles on the face and the baggy skin found on the backs of the arms, so the more collagen you have, the more elasticity the skin has, meaning, no more wrinkles.

Increased levels of HGH also help to maintain muscle mass, letting you keep hold of your figure for longer.

So don’t be put off from lifting weights the next time you hit the gym, you may have stumbled across the fountain of youth!

Adam Kemp Fitness

My number one piece of advice for women over 50 who want to change the way they look is to start strength training and don’t be afraid to lift heavy weights!

If someone is completely new to strength training, working with a personal trainer or someone more experienced is a great idea because they can help you avoid injuries and help you build a plan that works with your current fitness level.

Regardless, strength training and weight lifting is the an excellent way for women over 50 to change the way they look because it can improve their body composition and improve their health.

In general, the research is pretty clear: the more days, time, and effort women dedicate to strength training, the lower their body fat percentage (Burrup et al., 2017).

Furthermore, research indicates strength training programs can even improve body composition for women over 50 without “weight loss.”

For women over 50 who want to improve the way they look, starting a strength training program and sticking with it is the way to go!

Dee Matlok

My best tips for women in their 50s (like me!) are:

– have at least one glass of water first thing in the morning and before every meal. Being well hydrated helps eliminate waste and is great for our organs, including our biggest organ, the skin

– use sunscreen on your face, throat/neck and the tops of your hands every day

– cut back or eliminate alcohol. Alcohol can wreak havoc with hormones and can undermine your health and fitness goals

– prioritise getting quality sleep. Some ways to support this is to avoid rich foods, alcohol and electronic devices in the 2 hours before bed, have a set time to go to bed and to wake up every day, and to avoid caffeinated drinks after lunchtime as caffeine can stay in your system for as long as 10 hours

– make sure you’re having some form of protein at every meal. Protein is more satiating than carbohydrates and can also help prevent muscle loss, especially as we age. This can be as simple as using nut butter on your toast or adding eggs at breakfast and having lean proteins such as fish, chicken or tofu at lunch and dinner

– do weight-bearing exercise as this can help prevent muscle loss and can help with menopause symptoms. This can be as simple as a 30-minute walk every day

Shahada Karim – Habibi Sport

As we get older, it’s more important than ever to choose movement and nutrition that will help our bodies thrive.

1. Exercise

Movement is key for healthy aging. It doesn’t even have to be especially strenuous to be effective.

Movement helps keep our muscles active, our joints lubricated, and can even help keep our minds sharp. The more active we are in our later years, the more we can ensure a better quality of life.

2. Hydrate

Beyond simply drinking water, eating water-bearing foods like cucumbers, peppers, watermelon and peaches can help us stay hydrated.

Eating healthy fats like avocados and walnuts can also help lubricate our joints, and keep our skin smooth and supple.

3. Rest

Rest is important for everybody, but as we age it becomes crucial. The body repairs itself when we rest.

In addition to getting a good night’s sleep, it’s important to decompress and take time away from people, electronics and other forms of stimulus.

Dr. Sara Mikulsky

1.  Eat enough protein

Maintaining lean muscle mass is key to keeping the body healthy. Lean muscle mass helps joints function, protects from other diseases, and keeps the body lean and looking good.

Eating lean proteins such as fish, chicken, and pork are great ways to get this into the diet.

Additionally, as we get older, making sure protein is part of every meal can make a difference in your lean muscle mass

2. Weight train weekly

Resistance training is also another way to keep our bodies looking great as we get older. Using moderate weight can also help improve lean muscle mass, making our bodies stay toned and fit.

Contrary to belief, lifting weights will not make a woman bulky or large. Stressing the muscle to work with moderate weight can reduce weight, burn fat and improve body composition.

3. Practice good posture

Being aware and mindful of good posture helps our bodies look good as we get older.

Maintaining core strength and spinal mobility will help improve our posture. This can prevent us from “hunching”, developing pain, or acquiring stress fractures in the spine.

Esther Avant

I’ve worked with a lot of women in their 50s and beyond and there are two habits that are so important (always, but especially as we age).

1. Strength training

So many women focus their time and energy on doing excessive amounts of cardio when really the “magic” is in heavy (which is relative to the individual) and progressive strength training.

Even just 2-3 total body weight sessions per week goes a long way to helping build the muscle mass that helps women look strong and lean.

2. Prioritizing protein in your diet

We spend a lot of time debating whether we should go low carb or low fat when really the emphasis should be on making sure we’re taking in sufficient protein to support building new muscle and retaining the muscle we already have.

Aiming for at least 25g of protein at each meal is a huge step in the right direction as far as protein goes.

Focus your energy on lifting weights and prioritizing protein and you’ll love the way you look in your 50s and beyond.

Dr. Tom Biggart – EBM Fitness Solutions

As we get older the rules for training must be modified slightly. Training like we did in our 20’s when we are in our 50’s is not going to lead to frustration and lack of results.

That being said, there are some simple rules one can follow to get the most out of their training.

1. Assess

Know where your body is currently at before starting any program. Have a  thorough movement screen or analysis so you know which exercises are best to use now and which ones are better to avoid for now.

2. Address impairments

Once you have gone through the assessment, make sure the initial part of the plan addresses any impairments found in the assessment. That information should be the foundation of the program at the beginning.

3. Lift weights

Do not be afraid to lift challenging weights. Now, I am assuming steps 1 and 2 have already been done. If so, light weights can’t always be the only choice.

4. Get protein

We don’t store protein in our bodies the way we do with carbs and fats. This is why getting adequate protein daily is so important.

Aim for between half your body weight to your body weight as a range of grams to consume daily.

So, if I weigh 150 pounds, I would be looking at 75-150 grams per day. This approach will also help to “crowd out” so of the other foods that sneak in and sabotage our goals.

Stephanie Thomas Fitness

I highly recommend that women over the age of 50 start lifting weights as part of a regular exercise program. Weightlifting is one of the best ways to improve your muscle tone and definition.

It won’t make you bulky, but it will make you lean and sculpted! Your fitness program will boost your confidence, and you will really enjoy your workouts as you progress.

Lifting weights is vital to women’s health as they age, not just for looking and feeling good. As women, our bone mineral density declines as we age, but weight lifting will keep us strong and prevent injury!

Don’t be afraid to pick up some heavy weights at the gym.

I encourage my clients to challenge themselves with heavy dumbbells as they go along with their program, as long as they are performing all exercises with proper form.

You will be amazed at the results of strength training if you keep it up.

Ted Kallmyer – Healthy Eater

I’ve coached hundreds of women over 50 and there are two things that make the biggest difference in improving the way they look.

1. Strength training

Most women over 50 have come from the cardio generation, where cardio was promoted above all else as a way to look better. While cardio does have its place, it’s super important to not neglect strength training.

Building lean muscle tissue is a woman’s best friend when it comes to a healthy metabolism, keeping bones strong, and creating a more toned appearance.

Women in their 50s should focus on whole-body strength training that uses moderate weights and mixes in body weight movements. The session should last around 45 minutes.

Strength train 2-3 days per week with at least 1-2 rest days in between whole-body workouts.

2. Eat enough

Women over 50 are also from the generation that was told to exercise and eat 1200 calories if they want to look better and this couldn’t be further from the truth.

While eating in a calorie deficit is required for fat loss to occur, eating too little in conjunction with exercise, causes muscle loss as well as fat loss leading to a lower metabolic rate and a sluggish metabolism.

Women should make sure that they support their exercise, especially strength training with enough nutrition and enough protein.

There are many great online tools and apps to help women determine their optimal nutrition.

By focusing on these two things there is no reason women over 50 can’t be in the best shape of their lives and look better than ever.

Kathryn Alexander

My number one tip for women over 50 looking to improve the way they look: lift weights!

You can change your body in a positive way! You can change both the shape and health status of your body by lifting weights.

You are not too old for this – you are decades away from being too old to lift weights. And, you’ll actually set yourself up for greater energy and vitality for decades to come.

Remember that you start where you are: you do not have to start heavy. As you continue, you’ll get stronger and more comfortable. You’ll feel better and like the way your body changes.

Lifting will not help you spot reduce, but it will help you burn calories so you’ll get leaner overall.

Lifting can, however, help you spot gain. This means you can build your glutes and legs, build shapely arms, and curves in your shoulders.

You’ll immediately see boosts in your confidence and energy, and you’ll see increases in your metabolism, quality of sleep and muscle tone over the long term.

James de Lacey – Lift Big Eat Big

Stop Doing So Much Cardio!

Many women resort to cardio, HIIT classes, and yoga as their method for a sleek beach body look.

However, performing only cardio leaves you skinny fat. Essentially wasting away muscle and fat mass together resulting in no

body shape or curves.

Instead, lifting weights 3-4 times per week and reducing cardio to 1-2 times per week will transform a women’s body when over 50.

Weight training becomes more important as we age due to “anabolic resistance” meaning you are less sensitive to building muscle. Lifting weights improves this response when paired with adequate protein intake.

Attitude

Dr. Ryan Neinstein – Neinstein Plastic Surgery

While we may think that looking young with plastic surgery may help us feel better it

is much more advantageous to keep the mobile sense of wonder and fluidity of learning of our youth as the cornerstone of happiness.

With maturity (getting older in plastic surgeon talk) I have found that enhancing the way we look blossoms from the way we feel.

Sure, we can nip some extra skin and tuck some stubborn fat but living a life that is fulfilling and inspiring comes from a continued exploration of ourselves.

Reflecting on what I have learned from our patients on the feisty side of fifty I can recall a few key lessons on how to blend looking and feeling great.

Loving big and letting go are broad stroke concepts that can truly help unleash happiness.

When patients are truly generous with their love for others and are content with no longer being the minute-to-minute decision-makers in their children’s lives they feel free to explore things that they want for themselves.

Many of these amazing women find this a great time and the first time to seek some finesse plastic surgery that is truly for themselves without any guilt after giving so much to others for so many years.

It is most common that I see a disconnect between how the skin looks and how the patient feels.

Mini tucks which is a unique arm procedure we do where we tighten the arm skin and remove excess skin with a hidden armpit incision is very common amongst these patients who want to wear vibrant clothes and show off their arms but just need a tune up or pick me up to help the arms match their youthful spirit.

Juliana Leamen – Naturally Joyous

I believe a big part of external beauty is linked to our inner state of mind, and the more we understand this, the easier it becomes to make the outside match the inside.

In my work, I help women unleash confidence from within, by making key mindset shifts.

We all have authority voices, some as old as childhood, from loved ones, movies or TV shows, even a younger version of ourselves, telling us what we should or shouldn’t look like.

These voices, when loud, contribute to a woman’s feelings of not measuring up or wishing their bodies look different.

However, nothing is ever missing and beauty comes in every shape and size. Those outside of us are simply mirrors, reflecting our own inner beauty, even when we cannot see it.

Say you compare yourself with a younger woman with beautiful hair and you perceive you lack this quality. I invite you to ask yourself, what does the beautiful hair represent to you? Is it a sign of health? Youth? Feeling sexy and desirable? Why is it important to you?

The moment you identify its meaning, then the final step is to look for where you have it too, but in a different form.

What part of your body or what specific aspect of your personality makes you feel sexy and desirable, as an example.

Since nothing is missing, when you find where you have it too, you balance the scales in your mind and your confidence immediately gets a boost, no hair extensions required!

Claudia Cox – Text Weapon

Women over 50 have a certain beauty that the younger generation has yet to develop – an inner confidence, poise and gracefulness that only comes with age.

One of the biggest challenges for women over 50 is losing confidence. It’s so easy to look in the mirror and focus on what is wrong, not what is beautiful.

Schedule a quiet moment to do some soul-searching and list out what you like about yourself and how you could improve it.

It could be as easy as finding colors that flatter your skin tone to show off your fit figure, whitening your teeth to amplify your killer smile or investing in a new skincare routine to up your natural glow.

Or it could be starting a new strength training program to feel fit and fierce.

The most important thing is that you are prioritizing self-care and that you have made the decision to make these changes to please yourself, not other people.

Feel beautiful and you will shine.

Heather Mathes – Paid To Be Perfect

The best thing any woman can do at any age or any size is to focus on what feels good. And what do I mean by “what feels good”?

I mean what feels good innately: having the energy to get through your day; sleeping well; feeling satiated and well-nourished; thinking thoughts that serve you more often than not.

How do you find that place? By checking in and asking yourself: Is what I’m currently doing, eating, or thinking, pushing me closer towards feeling good, or away from feeling good?

If not, what are the specific steps that will take me there? In other words, CREATE HEALTHY HABITS.

I provide everything I’ve learned and the habits I’ve formed throughout my decades-long modeling career in the subjects of nutrition, fitness, skincare, and wellness, in my book Paid to Be Perfect: The Secret to Finding Your Perfect.

However, I’m always learning something new.

So recognizing that what feels good at one age might be completely different from what feels good later in life, and being open to learning what works is truly the best thing I know of to keep me feeling young in my 50s.

So focusing on feeling good, creating healthy habits, living with curiosity rather than judgment (you’re still perfect when you break those habits), and finding joy in the process of learning new ways of being are my favorite tips for living your best life at any age.

Jen Rigley – Flourishing Over Fifty

The number one way for a woman over 50 to improve the way they look is to work on developing their self confidence.

It is important to hold your head high, stand tall, make eye contact and smile. By doing this, you will transform not only the way you feel but also the way people feel about you.

They will feel your positive energy and confidence and respond to that feeling.

Other ways to build your self confidence include practicing gratitude every day, thinking positive thoughts, and doing some form of movement daily.

This might be a walk, a jog, a swim – anything that gets you moving for 20-30 minutes every day.

Another good tip is to take the time to think about all of your good qualities and when you’ve had successes in your life.

And don’t forget to reach out to friends and family – they will remind you how important you are in their lives.

All of these tips help you feel better about yourself and you’ll find they provide a confidence boost. A woman who projects confidence radiates happiness, healthiness and looks her best.

Soji James – 1AND1 Life

Keep yourself healthy! We look our best when we feel our best.

A balanced life filled with healthy foods, physical activity, and a positive mindset will make your skin, hair, and nails have a healthy glow. You will feel better in every outfit you wear too.

Know your body too. As we age we learn what is the best type of workouts, food, and habits for our body. This also applies to our style.

Feel good, know what makes you feel even better, and don’t worry about other people’s perceptions.

Wendy Irvine – The InspiredEater

I’m 57 and you’re writing about one of my favorite subjects.

My best tips for a vibrant look after age 50:

1. Hair color is huge and to avoid going broke at the salon: I do my base color at home and have my stylist put in the highlights twice a year. (Highlights are important because we don’t want that “one color” ski cap look.)

2. For inspiration. I follow a fashion blogger – in her late 30s – who has a colorful, trendy style that I try to emulate.

3. I got – and stayed – lean. At one time I called losing weight my “part-time” job so I wouldn’t be annoyed at the many tasks involved in losing after age 50.

I lost 55 lbs. in my early 40s and have maintained for 16 years now. Today I call keeping my weight down “my hobby.”

During the boredom of Covid, I created a blog detailing how I lost – and maintain – the weight. I’m not selling anything. There’s no money involved.

4. When I have a new eyeglass-prescription I try to get today’s style versus what I wore twenty years ago.

And that’s it for me!

Rachel D’Angelo – Beauti Soul

You know the saying “take care of your mind, body, and soul?”

Well, I’ve worked in the beauty industry for the past 15 years, and let me tell you: if you want to take care of all three, self-care is the key.

It’s not an expense cream or hair product; it’s a commitment to yourself.

It’s making time for what you need most—whether that means taking a bubble bath, meditating, or getting out of town for the weekend.

My most well-kept clients had that in common: they made their mental wellness a top priority!

This will surprise you!

The best kept secret in anti-aging and beauty is personal development.

Read the books, take the courses.

Continue to become the best version of yourself.

All the creams and treatments in the world won’t work if you don’t work on your ‘inner self’.
