Why Washing Lace Front Wigs is Important

When it comes to lace front wigs, keeping them clean is absolutely essential. Firstly, it helps prevent the buildup of bacteria, which can lead to hair looking unattractive and unpleasant.

Secondly, wig hair is different from our natural hair, as it lacks the natural sebum that keeps our hair moisturized and tangle-free. To restore the necessary moisture and nutrients to wig hair, it’s important to use the right hair care products, like hair conditioner and hair mask.

Pro Tips: If you own a colored lace front wig, you need to use more moisturizing hair care products. Because during the dyeing process, the cuticle layer of the hair still undergoes some damag

How Often Should You Wash Your Lace Front Wigs

How frequently you wash your lace front wigs, whether they’re made with synthetic or human hair, depends on how often you use them and how much makeup you use while wearing them. For example, you wear wigs daily and use a lot of concealer or foundation during installation. In that case, you’ll have to wash them more often than if you only use them occasionally.

Generally, women prefer washing their wigs once every two weeks, or when the hair begins to feel sticky, dry or loses its curl or volume. However, washing them at least once every ten days is recommended to keep them clean and dirt-free if you wear wigs along with heavy foundations. For some, washing their wigs once a month is okay so long as it’s not often used.

Pro tip: Do not overwash your wig, as it will damage the hair and cause it to lose its shine and original texture.

Detailed Steps to Wash Lace Front Wigs

Follow the below steps to wash your lace front wigs and keep them at tip-top conditions.

Step 1: Detangle Your Wig

The first thing to do is to detangle the hair on the wig. This is a crucial step as it will prevent hair damage and breakage throughout the washing process.

Begin by using your fingers to remove tangles. Afterward, comb your hair using a wire wig brush for straight and wavy hair, and a wide-toothed comb for curly hair. Gently comb your hair from the ends, going up to the base or roots, until the comb flows smoothly through the locks of the wig.

After combing, set the wig aside by placing it on a wig mannequin or stand.

Step 2: Make a Shampoo-Water Mixture

Now, fill your sink or bowl with lukewarm water and put in a squeeze or two of mild wig shampoo. Gently mix the solution with your hand. Avoid using standard or 2-in-1 shampoos for your wig, as they contain harsh chemicals that permanently damage your wig hair. Experts recommend using a mild or sulfate-free shampoo that’s intended for wigs.

Pro tip: Do not use hot water, as it may affect the quality of the wig.

Step 3: Soak The Wig

Before soaking the wig in the mixture, turn the wig cap inside out to properly cleanse the lace since it is the part that is most prone to dirt and sweat buildup. After that, soak the wig and gently swirl it so that the shampoo reaches all areas. If the lace needs extra cleaning, use your fingers to carefully rub away dirt.

Leave the wig in the solution for five minutes or longer, depending on the directions on the shampoo bottle.

Step 4: Rinse The Wig

After a few minutes, lift the wig from the mixture and gently rinse it with cold water. Make sure that the wig is free from any shampoo residue. For high-density hair, rinse it twice to ensure that there is no shampoo left in every corner of the wig. Rinsing it in a bowl of cold water or under a faucet will work in this step.

Step 5: Apply Conditioner

Pat the hair dry with a towel and turn the wig right side up before applying a gentle or mild conditioner to the hair. Be careful not to put conditioner on the lace as it may loosen the knots, resulting in shedding. Leave on the conditioner for two to three minutes before rinsing it.

You can also opt for a leave-in conditioner so you no longer need to rinse the wig again.

Step 6: Squeeze The Remaining Water From The Wig

After rinsing, squeeze the remaining water from the wig. Start squeezing the hair near the base, then go down to the ends. Make sure not to squeeze it too tightly, as it may cause the wig to break or shed.

Lace front wigs are a little more sensitive than wefted and traditional wig caps, so you must be careful handling them, especially when they’re still wet. Patting the hair’s excess moisture away using a microfiber towel is also a good choice if you don’t want to risk damaging your wig.

Note: Skip this step if you use a leave-in conditioner.

Step 7: Air-Dry The Wig

Put the wig on a wig mannequin or stand and wait for it to dry. It usually takes 12 to 24 hours for a wig to dry fully. But if you are in a hurry, you can use a blow dryer, but only on the lowest heat setting, and only on human hair wigs. Unless heat-resistant, blow-drying synthetic hair may melt its fibers off, permanently damaging the wig.

Pro tip: Make sure to put the wig on a well-fitting wig stand or mannequin during this phase to maintain its proper shape and quality.

Step 8: Style The Hair

Once the wig is fully dried, you can safely style the hair. Start by combing. You may also apply a detangling spray during this phase to easily manage the hair. For human hair and heat-resistant synthetic fibers, you may need to use a heat-protectant serum or spray before heat-styling your hair.

For curly hair, you can use your fingers to reshape its original curls. Do this by curling small locks of hair on your fingers, and holding it for a few seconds before letting go.

If you are not going to use the wig, you should store it in a clean and dry place. Make sure that it is stored well in a proper container if you don’t plan on using it anytime soon, or is hanging properly on a wig stand or mannequin if you use it frequently.
